So like Grump-a-saurus Rex stated, Tattoo raved about this place, so we, as a group, went to check it out.
Let me tell you right off the bat, that their mascot is a dancing Hawaiian pig, and appropriately so. This food was some of the fattiest morsels to ever touch my lips!
But if you have ever had Hawaiian food before, then you will know that all Hawaiian food is fatty so this was not a suprise by any means. And I suppose this is why when you think Hawaiian peoples, you think Samoan and you picture this:
This...
This...
All very big, scary men that must eat high calorie food and if I met in dark alley, and they were angry, I would probably loose control of my bodily functions and curl up in the feetle position.
Anyway, back to the actual food... Tats kept compairing it to Helenas, and I agree, it's pretty similar, but the portions are WAY bigger and so is the price.
Plus, one celebrity stood out from the rest as a beacon of light in an otherwise drab and dreary dive joint:
Chuck-MOTHERFLIPPING-Norris!!!
So anyway, the wonderful waitress helped us choose and brought out things for us to try and sample...
I ordered the Kalua Pig Plate and was NOT disappointed! The pork was juicy and tender and just plain good! The Lomi Salmon was ok... cold fish bits with tomato bits... I ate around the nasty tomato to get that wonderful meat. I dunked my rice in my Beef Stew and ate all the potatoes and meat out of it. After I finished my plate, I finished off what the Grumpster couldn't in his pork LauLau ( I liked my pork better... his was kinda dry and surrounded by butter fish... which I think tastes like straight lard).
If you couldn't tell already... I eat meat. I will mix other crap around my meat but mainly I eat meat.
Overall, I liked this place and will bring others back for "traditional" Hawaiian food. Like Lord Grump-i-cus... I spent my time in the bathroom afterwards but I process food quickly and I am in the bathroom 20 min after I eat ANYTHING, so no change there.
If you are looking for something traditional and don't want to wait in Helena's monster of a line.... go on down to Ono Hawaiian Foods. You'll be "whatever" about it! :)
What's your favorite "local food" joint from where you're at? What *is* considered local food where you're at? Tell me your dreams and future food goals, bia!@
